The Ellen Frances

January 12, 1877

Sch. Ellen Frances, owned by B. Maddocks & Co., sailed on a herring and trading voyage in Sept. She left Souris, P. E. I., with a load of potatoes, for this port, Dec. 5th, since which time nothing has been heard of her.

She probably foundered in the terrible gales which commenced on the 9th and continued through the 10th and 11th of Dec. She was commanded by Capt. John Lunergan of Beverly and had a crew of four men, shipped in Boston, whose names we have been unable to learn.

She was built at Essex in 1858, was 55.44 tons, and valued at $2450. There was an insurance of $2144 on the vessel and $1000 on her outfits in the Gloucester Mutual Fishing Insurance co., and $1000 on her cargo in the Gloucester Fire Insurance Co.
